Building a design studio

Project

In June of 2022, Studio GraphicHunters was founded. I was approached for the first position available—as the right-hand man, Studio Manager, to the founder and creative director, Ché Heijnen. My role was to handle all operations while Ché focused on the creative aspects.

Role

The role of studio manager asked to set-up and optimize all operations on daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. Guarding KPI's, client relationships, invoicing,  project management, creating visual proposals and pitching new business. Creating and coaching a team of young talented designers and managing the office space. This management position also asked of me to implement, analyze and iterate on strategies and projects in order to craft a healthy business.

Starting up

Studio GraphicHunters is a boutique design studio focusing on impactful brand identities and campaigns in sports. By choosing a hyper-focused 'A+ brand & sports-only' proposition, we are able to excel at what we do and successfully differentiate ourselves from the rest of the market.

Like most startups, we began in the canteen of a shared business center with just three people. After six months, we moved to our own office in the city center of Den Bosch and established our HQ. Over the past two years, we have built a solid team of six in-house members and a creator network of over 25 designers, 2D & 3D animators, illustrators, and other creatives from around the world, with whom we regularly collaborate.

We've developed close relationships with A+ brands in and around sports on an international level and continue to create great brands and campaigns together in the world of sports.

After two years, I am proud to say that we have made significant progress toward becoming a healthy business in record time. I can confidently say that our operations are well-functioning, ready for a senior project manager to step in and take over day-to-day operations.

My role

We started with an idea and a clear direction. Armed with my trusty laptop, I brainstormed ways of working and ideal processes with the creative director before implementing these in software programs like Asana, Harvest, Forecast, Discord, Figma, and Dropbox. These form the base of our operations to this day after countless iterations during usage.

Together, we built a team of highly talented in-house and freelance designers from all over the world, whom I coached daily on project-related matters, as well as in bi-weekly one-on-one sessions. In these sessions, I implemented KPIs while considering individual personal development goals.

In a start-up environment, management roles often require wearing multiple hats. I also served as Client Lead/Project Manager, responsible for budgeting, planning, creative proposals, and invoicing for over 500 projects in the past two years. This included analyzing and improving team effectiveness, rates, account plans, potential new business, cash flow, and dashboarding.

My 10 years of experience as a creative in the field enabled me to advise both the client and creative team where necessary. Additionally, I stepped in to support the team with animations, video editing, designing sketches, making adjustments in visuals, and providing necessary art direction."
